Sophie is traveling for work and she needs new luggage. So, she proceeds to go to search on Google. She finds a website with a great preview of their available luggage. She then clicks on it. There, she finds really beautiful pieces of luggage, so she clicks on it. But the page leads her to something else, other products of the brand. But she just wants the luggage. She goes back and clicks on her chosen luggage again.

She clicks it again to see more of the luggage. Satisfied, she puts it in the cart and ready to buy. But at the purchasing stage, the site is asking for many details no longer related to the actual purchase of the product.

How do you think Sophie will feel? She’s definitely going to feel irritated. She just wants to buy nice luggage. She really didn’t need all the extra stuff. Suffice to say that her user experience is not that great.

Fulfilling the user’s needs

Basically, the UX design aims to fulfil what the user needs. In the case of Sophie, she wants luggage. So, let her buy the luggage of her dreams—just that, nothing more!

According to the rule of thumb, a good UX design allows the user to be where they want to be in just three clicks. In Sophie’s case, she should be able to buy luggage in just three clicks. Or at least, in three clicks, she should be on the page where she could already put the luggage in the cart or actually pay for it.

A good UX design provides a positive experience for the user navigating the website or web app or mobile app. Imagine what happens when Sophie is satisfied with her experience. She’s only going to have good memories of buying luggage with that one company.

Because of that, there is a strong chance that she’s going to buy from that business again. Even better—there’s also a strong chance that Sophie is going to tell friends about her wonderful experience. She would also encourage her friends to buy from the same brand.

See the effect of a good UX design? There could be a chain reaction—a positive one—for your company. Of course, you might say that user experience is rather subjective. One person might enjoy swimming while the other doesn’t. This person may enjoy eating pizza but that person prefers burgers.

Translating this on the website, some people might like your website because of the color schemes. Others may not for the same reason.

However, when it comes to websites and other online activities, there are always some common denominators. Users will always want a straightforward website. They should not be bothered with other links and especially ads. They also want the site to be fast.

Neatness is also an important factor. While neatness can be considered a subjective term, when there is an actual neat product—physical or digital—there can be a consensus. It’s the same with a web design. You will know what a neat design is when you see one.

Where does the UI fit into this?

There are two separate designs that websites need: UX and the user interface design. They are two different design elements that are sometimes handled by two people.

However, these designs are closely related to each other. The user interface is basically the digital space where the device and the user interact with each other. The user experience evokes emotions. The UI design is what actually meets the eyes. This is where neatness comes in. When the components that make up the web page are neat, then the user will have an easy time understanding the process.

This means that just by looking at the page, they will already know what to do. That’s also why neatness is something designers aspire for because if there are too many things going on, the user will have a hard time figuring out what button to click to navigate the website.

The UI also touches on the color scheme of the website. Of course, the brand colors of the company should be prominent on the website. However, there are images and fonts to consider. A great UI designer will know what works with what.

That’s just the basics of it. There are so many more things to consider when it comes to the interface. One thing is for certain, the UI design affects the UX design.

People in the digital age have limited attention span. If they don’t like the website at first glance, if they are not truly interested in the products and services offered by the company, they will not take time to get to know the brand.

In the case of Sophie, she really needed luggage. So, she would really browse through the pages. However, if Sophie somehow chances upon a shoe website, she might click on it in between looking for types of luggage.

On the shoe website, Sophie immediately doesn’t like the layout of the website. If she doesn’t like the layout, chances are she wouldn’t like the designs of the shoes, too. You always have to think of the competition. If a lot of users are not fond of the user interface of your website, they would just simply go: next!

There are so many websites out there. A lot of them serve the same target market. You need to stay ahead and one way to do that is to make sure that your UI and UX designs are on point.
